The 10 Best Movies of 2000

Billy Elliot
British director Stephen Daldry’s directorial debut, which eloquently tells the uplifting story of a young boy who endeavors to find his own identity in a working-class community where violence and social unrest are the norm. To simply label this dramatic comedy as a film about dancing is a grave misconception. Rather, dancing is a symbolic representation of freedom, vitality and the courage needed to combat fear. Inspirational, heartfelt and superbly acted.

Billy Elliot
This British drama/comedy about a young boy's desire to be a ballet dancer is funny, insightful and touching. While most of Hollywood seems to rely on big-budget spectacles, usually with small effect, this gem wows its audience with fine storytelling and thoroughly developed characters. A near-perfect movie.
